There’s something truly magical about photographing an engagement session outdoors, the way the sunlight dances through the oak trees, the quiet warmth of golden hour, and those small moments that unfold naturally between two people. As a San Antonio & Texas Hill Country Engagement Photographer, I'm always so excited when couples choose a gorgeous Texas State Park to be their backdrop.
Whether your session takes place among wildflowers in the Texas Hill Country, by the riverwalk downtown, or on a quiet trail at sunset, a little preparation helps make the experience stress-free and full of joy! Here’s how to get ready for your outdoor engagement session so you can feel confident, relaxed, and totally yourselves.
1. Choose a Location That Feels Like You
Your engagement photos should reflect your personalities, your story, and the way you connect. Think about the places that hold meaning for you as a couple. Do you love weekend hikes, slow mornings by the water, or exploring downtown cafes together? I’m always happy to help you find a location that fits your vision—whether it’s a hidden trail, a blooming garden, or a scenic overlook with sweeping Hill Country views. Once you book, I will send over location suggestions based on your desired vibe & overall look you want for pictures.
2. Plan Your Outfits Thoughtfully
Outdoor light can be magical, but it also highlights color in unique ways. Soft neutrals, muted pastels, and earth tones tend to photograph beautifully against natural backdrops. Think flowy fabrics, linen textures, and soft layers that move with you. My biggest recommendation is bringing a fancy outfit, more casual outfit & a third option if you want to add more variety to your gallery. If you need some help picking outfits, just send me a message.
I always recommend picking coordinating outfits not matching outfits. The colors should complement each other. You can include solid colors, larger patterns & different textures. Most importantly, wear something that makes you feel like yourselves. Confidence always translates beautifully in photos!
3. Consider the Time of Day
Lighting makes all the difference in photography, especially outdoors. I always recommend scheduling your session around golden hour which is that magical time just after sunrise or before sunset. The light is soft, flattering, and gives everything that warm, glowing feel that makes outdoor sessions so dreamy! While sunrise sessions are peaceful & romantic, sunset sessions are cozy, golden & perfect for every couple. After booking, I will help you select the perfect time for your session!
4. Bring a Few Essentials
Since we’ll be outdoors, here are a few things to keep handy:
- Comfortable shoes for walking between spots
- A small touch up kit for makeup, hair, etc.
- A small towel & fan for sweat
- Water (especially for those Texas summers)
- Any little items you may want to include in your session
I always bring a few essentials with me as well to make sure we're well prepared! I bring a blanket for sitting pictures, a fan, larger towel (if we happen to get in the water) & a changing tent if necessary.
5. Embrace the Experience
Your engagement session is more than just a photoshoot. It’s a chance to celebrate your story & what better way to celebrate with a little date night for the two of you. Laugh, move, explore, and enjoy the moment. I’ll guide you through natural prompts to help you feel comfortable, but the best photos always come from genuine connection & emotion. My goal is to make you comfortable so please don't be afraid to be yourselves.
If the wind catches your hair or the grass brushes your dress, try to embrace it. Those unscripted, imperfect moments often end up being the most beautiful!
6. Trust Me as Your Photographer
You’ve chosen your photographer for a reason. Trust their eye for light, composition, and storytelling. My goal is for your session to feel less like posing for the camera and more like a fun, relaxed date night (with me tagging along to capture the magic).
Engagement sessions are all about connection, adventure, and the beauty of this season of life. They’re a chance to slow down, breathe, and soak in the excitement of your upcoming wedding day.
